Though many scholars have questioned whether Hesiod's poem Works and Days is a practical treatise on farming, and whether it reflects social and economic reality in Boeotia the sixth century BCE, Marsilio finds that they have not fully explored the diction the poet employs to describe Perses' dependent behavior and the ideal farmer's pursuit of self-sufficiency.
